Alamo Heights math teacher Mr. Mallet’s journey to becoming an educator has been unique, but once he arrived at Alamo Heights, he quickly earned respect and became a favorite among his students. His passion for math is unshakable, and it’s this dedication that fuels his commitment to helping his students succeed.

Mr. Mallet came to Alamo Heights after his first teaching position. “I needed a change, so I went to a job fair in San Antonio, saw Alamo Heights, and decided to check them out. They were really nice people, so I applied and got the job,” he explained. His path to teaching was far from traditional, though.

A past job often shapes a teacher’s approach to the classroom, and Mr. Mallet’s military experience has greatly influenced his teaching. “I was in the military, which helped me become a good teacher because the leadership skills I gained helped me push students to their best. I also learned organization from the army,” he shared. This experience has played a key role in his ability to motivate and manage his classroom.

Mr. Mallet’s college experience was also unexpected. “I went to North Baptist University and took a class in electronics, which was related to my military job. But surprisingly, my major was management,” he explained. It’s unusual for a math teacher to have a management degree, but Mr. Mallet’s diverse background has enriched his teaching.

While math has always come naturally to him, teaching has presented its own challenges. “Math has always been easy for me, but I would say it’s frustrating when students can’t understand the material I’m teaching,” he said. Despite these challenges, his love for teaching remains steadfast.

Mr. Mallet has a deep appreciation for the Alamo Heights community, especially the local football scene. “I love the parents and their dedication. I also enjoy the small-town feel, even though we’re in the middle of a city. And I love going to the games—the atmosphere at the football stadium and the support from the fans is amazing!” he said with enthusiasm. It was clear that this was his favorite part of our conversation.

Students who have had Mr. Mallet praise his ability to find teaching methods that connect with them and help them understand challenging math concepts. Above all, he always puts a smile on his students’ faces. Mr. Mallet is dedicated to setting his students up for success, and he’s committed to helping them build a strong future.
