At Alamo Heights Junior School, many teachers find deep satisfaction in their positions. They love being able to give students remarkable experiences, create safe spaces, and guide them throughout the year.

One of the teachers’ favorite things to provide for their students in the classroom is the opportunity to participate in enjoyable and memorable educational events during different topics. “Right now we’re doing our survival unit on Hatchet, and I decorated my classroom as Hatchet, so the kids and I are really enjoying it,” Coach Saenz says enthusiastically.

Reading classrooms are not the only place where cool things happen; there are fun activities in the science building as well. “Most days, I get to come in and give [students] experiences that are not typical to what you might be doing in another classroom,” says Mrs. Henry eagerly.

The teachers also take pride in being able to create a safe space for their students. “When I see someone who is typically walking into the classroom and maybe has told me they don’t like science, or they have a hard time at school on a regular basis. They feel like they either don’t belong, or they have a hard time being successful in a classroom and learning because they have a disability,” said Mrs. Henry. “Those moments when I’m able to create a space that is safe and empowering for even a few minutes out of the day.” Through this statement, she truly expresses her love for helping students feel welcomed inside her classroom.

Educators at the Junior School find great delight in introducing and developing projects during the school year. “I really like our Pinewood Derby because you get to be creative and competitive,” Mrs. Henry mentions excitedly. Yet this is not the only thing that excites Mrs. Henry.

“My favorite topic to be able to teach and let [students] learn about is space. I think that one is really fascinating, and usually [students] are really curious and have tons of questions.” This shows how Mrs. Henry looks forward to many things along the way and cannot wait to share her love for science through these topics and projects.

Classrooms across the Junior School are full of affection and energy. This can be felt throughout the school, leaving students with long-lasting, unforgettable memories.
