Art at AHJS has been pretty great over the years, but what about this year? Throughout the past few years, AHJS art teachers have been working hard to improve the art program.

One of the art teachers here at AHJS is Ms. Wofford. Students here say, “She is very comforting,” which helps them a lot in the classroom. Students also like how “when she has a project, she gives us almost the rest of the month to finish it.” This helps the students put all their effort into their assignments and do the little details well. Ms. Wofford has been teaching these students for about 10 weeks so far. The students say that she “focuses a lot on contour lines.” Contour lines help the students’ art ability by helping them define the outline of an object, which makes their drawings look more defined and realistic.

In art class, the focus is drawing. Some people don’t like drawing, and some love it, but at AHJS, students feel like “art is calming.” Being calm in your class plays a big part in how you do grade-wise and mentally throughout the day, and art class gives students a whole class period to relax and do art. There are also many more benefits to art classes. Students love how when they learn new things, they are “fun to draw in their free time,” so they can use the skills they learned in the classroom when they are drawing for fun.

The art teachers have been working hard with the school district to upgrade equipment and the overall art program in Alamo Heights. When asked about what they can improve, students in the art program say they could “take care of the supplies and make more projects.” Others say, “I’m not sure.” The Alamo Heights school district does a great job every year of having the available equipment for the program, which is funded by the 25-dollar art fee students pay at the start of the year.

Overall, the art program has come a long way throughout the years, and students at AHJS are ready and excited to see it grow and change. However, some things need to be changed, and the teachers are ready to upgrade the program to a whole new level.
