The Alamo Heights Mules are entering a new era as they transition into a more competitive athletic district for the upcoming season. The NEISD district should bring great competition. This realignment marks a pivotal moment in the school’s sports program, bringing fresh challenges, renewed energy, and greater opportunities for student-athletes across all teams. With a long-standing tradition of strong performances, the Mules are eager to compete against a higher caliber of opponents. Both coaches and players see this move as a chance to grow, push boundaries, and showcase their talents on a larger stage.

More Competition

Coach Wogstad expressed optimism about the switch, saying, “The new district will provide better competition and be much easier to schedule things.” He noted that the previous district was difficult to work with, citing issues with scheduling and coordination. According to Wogstad, the new district is expected to be more organized and consistent, creating a better environment for both players and staff.

Golf Benefits

Beyond athletics, the NEISD district offers practical benefits that extend into the classroom. Last year, away games often required nearly an hour of travel, causing students to miss significant class time. This season, most schools in the district are “only about 15 minutes away,” according to Coach Wogstad. That shorter travel time will allow student-athletes to stay in class longer and maintain a better balance between academics and extracurricular activities.

While football may draw the most attention, the impacts include all sports, including basketball, soccer, and golf. The golf team, in particular, is set to benefit in a major way. Last year, the team had difficulty finding local opponents and was forced to travel outside the district just to fill their schedule. As a result, they participated in only three tournaments, one of which was canceled due to weather. With the new district providing more local competition, the team expects a full and active season with significantly more opportunities to compete and improve.

Alamo Heights being the new team in the district is going to create a lot of suspense for the other teams and make some good rivals for Alamo Heights. The community can look forward to more exciting matchups, like games against Tex Hill and Lopez. The players are also looking forward to this new district. Starting quarterback Ben Dorris says, “The boys are ready for some new competition.”

This district realignment is more than just a change in geography. It represents a step forward for Alamo Heights athletics. With improved organization, reduced travel, and higher-quality competition, the Mules are poised to thrive. As the season begins, the community is ready to cheer them on as they take this next step with determination and pride. Let’s see what these Mules can do.
