Peanut butter is a food staple beyond one’s home; it is an instrument of incredible power in the fight against hunger. In Alamo Heights schools, students and staff alike are employing this simple food to make a tremendous difference through an amazing fundraiser: the Peanut Butter Bowl. The yearly food drive, which started as a modest community effort but now is sweeping the state, is a lifeline of nutrition to the hungry.

The Peanut Butter Bowl is a unique fundraiser in which communities band together to collect jars of peanut butter to donate to local food banks. Alamo Heights Assistant Principal Mrs. Aguirre explained that it’s a significant way to help families. “Peanut butter is a staple that is found in many homes and that we can use,” she said. “Over the weekend, when kids have nowhere to go to eat, they come here and get lunch and breakfast. It’s something that can tide them over.”

The event was established by Bold Ministries, a non-profit that works with communities. The program has since gained usage among hundreds of schools and coaches, including Coach Rittimann at Alamo Heights, who has been a staunch supporter of the program since his early days in his former district.

Alamo Heights students are directly involved in the food drive through donations of jars of peanut butter. The school also employs a system for people to donate money, and that money is taken by the organization and used to buy additional peanut butter in bulk. The two-pronged approach ensures that every donation, no matter the amount, counts. The result of this combined effort is nothing less than astounding. What started with two rival teams playing a single game has expanded to an astonishing number.

As Assistant Principal Mr. Saldana notes, the program has grown tremendously: “It’s gotten so big that I think it’s like a thousand schools in the state of Texas that do the Peanut Butter Bowl.” Growth like that speaks volumes about how much power such a simple idea can wield when embraced by individuals.

Likely the most fun aspect of the Peanut Butter Bowl is its affordability for anyone to participate. A jar of peanut butter costs only a few dollars, so students and parents are able to assist with a significant cause in an economical manner. “Think about it,” said Mr. Saldana. “Peanut butter jars are two or three dollars.” Such affordability makes the event easily accessible for everyone, and this generates a sense of community and shared purpose among all participating schools.

It is not a competition; it’s a powerful statement about the community’s spirit and its humane nature. It teaches students the importance of giving back and shows them the real difference they can create in another person’s life. The collective effort of Texas schools, along with the devotion of coaches like Coach Rittimann, is an exemplary demonstration of a group commitment to fighting hunger. Through this collective endeavor, these communities are not just providing essential nutrition, but also a message of hope—one jar of peanut butter at a time.
