A lot of people are probably wondering what Esports here at Alamo Heights Junior School is all about. Esports has been at the Junior School for around five years. It first came to the surface in 2021 and has been a sport ever since. The two coaches for the Alamo Heights Esports team are Coach Sei, who is also a science teacher, and Coach Deiorio, who is an assistant teacher. After interviewing Coach Sei about what goes on in Esports, he gave us a wide variety of great answers to the questions I asked, so you’re going to want to read this.

Coach Sei has always wanted to be a part of a gaming group since he was younger and never found the chance until he became a teacher here at Alamo Heights Junior School. So, back in 2021, Esports became a sport here at AHJS. “I always liked gaming when I was younger. There were not a lot of available places where you had safe gaming, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to do it. I want the kids to have that opportunity,” Coach Sei said. This shows that he has always wanted a gaming group and knew the kids wanted it as well.

When Coach Sei scouts for new team members, he doesn’t just look at skills in the game. He looks for good behavior, good manners, and good grades. “Behavior and manners, great behaviors and manners, and then that when they lose, that they take it the right way. I don’t like toxic playing or people that get depressed when they don’t play the right way,” Coach Sei said. This shows that Coach Sei doesn’t just look for good gamers, but also for considerate and courteous players.

Coach Sei believes that players learn teamwork, leadership, and how to grow as better people and players. Mr. Sei loves to tell his players, “I try to tell students don’t try to win. Try to fix one problem every match. If you do that, by the end of the week you’re going to be a different player.” This shows that Coach Sei wants his student-athletes to grow both as people and as players.

That is how Coach Sei scouts for players, why he created the Esports team, and what he tells his players to motivate them for their Esports matches.
