Being a good track athlete takes more than just being fast. You have to work hard, stay focused, and push yourself even when it gets hard. Success doesn’t just happen, you have to practice and really care about what you’re doing. Joshua Sawyer, an 8th grader, shows what it means to be dedicated to track.

Doing More Than One Event

Some track athletes only do one event, but others do more. Joshua competes in three events: the 100-meter sprint, high jump, and triple jump. Each event is different and takes different skills. Joshua shows that if you work hard, you can be good at more than one event.

Practicing Different Skills

Athletes have to train differently for each event. “For the [100m], we practice starting and running fast. For high jump and triple jump, we practice our steps and jumping form. At the end, we stretch again,” Joshua says. Sprinting is about speed and power. Jumping is about good form and timing. Practicing each event during the week helps athletes improve in all of them.

Events Help Each Other

One cool thing about track is that events can help each other. “Sprinting helps with jumping because it builds speed and power,” Joshua explains. This shows that getting better at one event can help you in another. Doing multiple events can make an athlete stronger overall.

Getting Ready for a Meet

Doing well at a meet starts before you even get there. “Before a meet, I make sure I get good sleep and drink a lot of water. I also eat healthy food so I have energy,” Joshua says. “At the meet, I warm up by jogging, stretching, and doing drills.” This shows that winning isn’t just about running fast. It’s also about taking care of your body.

Balancing School and Track

It can be hard to balance school and sports. “I try to finish my homework before practice or right after school. I stay organized and don’t wait until the last minute,” Joshua says. Managing time is important for student-athletes. It helps them do well in school and in sports.

Coaches and Teammates Matter

Track athletes don’t succeed alone. Coaches help a lot. “My coach encourages us and tells us to keep trying even when it’s hard. They help us fix our mistakes and set goals,” Joshua says. Teammates are important too. “The most fun part is being with my friends and cheering each other on.” Even though they compete in different events, they still support each other like a team.

Lessons From Track

Athletes like Joshua show what dedication looks like. With hard work, practice, support, and good time management, they can succeed. The lessons learned on the track, like responsibility and not giving up, can help in other parts of life too.
