The Junior School orchestra recently traveled to Houston to compete against other orchestra programs from across Texas. During an interview with directors Mr. Garcia and Mrs. Gil, they explained how the trip gave students the chance to perform for professional judges, gain new experiences, and represent their school outside their city. The directors shared that the competition helped students see how their orchestra program compares to others on a statewide level.
One of the biggest accomplishments from the trip was earning Superior Awards. Mrs. Gil explained that these awards are based on judges’ evaluations using a performance rubric rather than simply comparing schools against each other. Receiving superior ratings showed that the orchestra performed at a very high level and demonstrated the hard work students had put in throughout the year. The directors said these awards were important because they reflected the quality of the orchestra’s performance.
The trip was also valuable because it gave students opportunities beyond music. According to the directors, many students had never traveled for a school activity before, so the experience helped them build friendships and create memories together. Mrs. Gil explained that orchestra allows students to experience new places while developing teamwork and camaraderie outside the classroom.
Mr. Garcia and Mrs. Gil also described the planning that went into organizing the trip. The directors worked together to divide responsibilities such as arranging transportation, ordering food, and managing other important details. Their teamwork helped make the trip successful and ensured that students could focus on performing and enjoying the experience.
During the competition, students practiced important musical skills such as playing together as an ensemble, following the conductor, listening to one another, and working together during performances. Mr. Garcia explained that the Houston trip represented the final result of all the students’ preparation and practice throughout the school year. Overall, the trip was a successful experience that strengthened the orchestra program and gave students valuable opportunities both musically and personally.
