I recently interviewed the head coach of Alamo Heights Junior School, Coach Bond, and asked him, “Why do we wear different colors to the football games?”
According to Coach Bond, wearing Blue and Gold is a way to show support for the Alamo Heights School District and the Alamo Heights community, as those are the school colors. It also demonstrates school spirit and helps identify you as an Alamo Heights student, athlete, and community member.
I also asked Coach Bond about one of the most popular football games, the Pink Out. Coach Bond explained, “We wear pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness and because pink is associated with women’s health.” He added, “Alamo Heights, along with many other schools and sports organizations, designates a day in October to wear pink during games. This helps raise awareness about breast cancer and the ongoing efforts to find a cure.” He noted that professional sports teams, including those in the MLB, NFL, and NBA, also participate in this initiative by wearing pink during games to support this important cause.
Lastly, Coach Bond shared some interesting facts about why competitive teams wear lighter and darker uniforms. He said, “Teams wear opposite colors to easily tell them apart.” He further explained that football teams typically wear darker uniforms for home games and lighter uniforms for away games. For basketball, teams wear lighter uniforms at home and darker uniforms when playing away. This color distinction is especially important when teams share similar colors, ensuring that both teams can be easily recognized during a game.
