A lively center where creativity and collaboration merge to transform productions into visual spectacles, Tech Theater plays an essential role in creating memorable performances. Mr. Gabelmann highlights this: “The technical theater is the group that is making the WOW factor. They are making things look impressive.” This underlines the critical role Tech Theater plays in leaving audiences amazed.
Each year, Mr. Gabelmann collaborates with Miss Bynum to introduce fresh and innovative ideas, ensuring that every lesson is engaging and exciting. He explains, “Miss Bynum and I are working collaboratively to come up with something new, so that it’s a fresh start every year.” This partnership keeps the curriculum dynamic, allowing both returning students and newcomers to explore new concepts.
Tech Theater consists of a variety of vital roles, each contributing to the production’s success. Mr. Gabelmann notes, “There’s one or two stage managers, then we have people who are fabricators and people who do costumes.” He adds, “There are people who do makeup to make you look older or younger. We have lighting and sound technicians in the booth making all the stuff that you see happen on stage.”
Each student plays a significant role in ensuring smooth performances during rehearsals and live shows. Stage managers plan the entire production, while fabricators bring the producers’ visions to life through detailed sets and props. Makeup artists creatively enhance characters, and lighting and sound technicians create the audible and visual effects that captivate the audience.
The week leading up to a production, known as “Hell Week,” is often the most challenging. Mr. Gabelmann describes Hell Week as “when we’re trying to get all that last-minute stuff together.” This stressful week is crucial for addressing any issues that may arise and ensuring everything is perfect for opening night. Despite the stress, it is also rewarding, as students and teachers see their hard work come to life on production night.
Overall, Tech Theater at Alamo Heights Junior School offers students invaluable opportunities to collaborate, learn, and create impressive costumes and props. Participants gain essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity that extend beyond the theater. Perhaps the best part is its inclusivity. As Mr. Gabelmann states, “It’s free to anyone as long as you are able to follow simple instructions.” This open-door policy invites all students to engage in the magic of theater, fostering a supportive environment that nurtures creativity and teamwork.
Through the efforts of Mr. Gabelmann, Miss Bynum, and their students, Tech Theater not only enhances performances but also shapes lasting relationships and skills that will benefit students for years to come.
