The sixth grade annex building was embellished with decorations that brought joy to everyone’s hearts, from the whimsical blow-up Grinch to the delicate paper snowflakes. But a few weeks before winter break, the annex was left bare and cold. It was an empty space, but not for long! With care and love, a small, playful decoration was strung in the hallways, hoping to ring in the holiday spirit. It’s a festive atmosphere, made all the more special by a friendly competition between the top and bottom floors.
What started out as a bit of playful fun became an unexpected competition. “I was going to go upstairs too, but I just ran out of time that day,” says Mr. Miller, a sixth-grade social studies teacher. “I guess they thought that we were just trying to show them up and decorate downstairs and just like that it turned into a competition. ”
Ms. Brady, another sixth grade teacher, shared her delight, saying, “It was fun. It was very positive competition, and it was just exciting. Kids still talk about how much they liked it.” The atmosphere throughout the building was one of pure joy, with decorations being added daily to create the most vibrant and lively floor.
As you make your way through the enchanting Christmas tree forest and past the playful abominable snowman, you’ll find yourselves on the top floor of the annex. Coach Saenz, a 6th grade English teacher, says, “They’re like upstairs versus downstairs and at the end of the day we just wanted them to enjoy the lights.” Whether it’s a friendly competition or just a festive decoration, the memories made during sixth grade will always be cherished.
“Day after day, they kept saying how much they enjoyed it. So hopefully in the future we’ll do it again,” Coach Seanz says. The spirited teachers noticed how joyful the students appeared when the building was decorated in festives and have been pondering on a possibility of another competition in the future ever since, Mr. Miller and Ms. Brady even says that there might be a voting system for the next competition.
Who could have imagined that a friendly competition between the top and bottom floors would leave such fond memories for both the teachers and students? While there wasn’t a clear winner, the true champions are the students and teachers who experienced the most holiday spirit. As the holiday season came to a close, the decorations gradually melted, but the memories made will forever stay in our hearts.
