At Alamo Heights Junior School , many students have very packed schedules after school. Students might play a sport or participate in an after-school club. Ms. Fuller (AHJS counselor) says, “If students are involved in multiple activities after school, it can cause challenges; these challenges can lead to stress or anxiety.”

But that’s not always the case; sometimes, students’ schedules can really benefit them. Ms. Fuller says, “Students being able to participate in outside school activities can be a stress reliever.”

Stress and anxiety can affect teenagers in many different ways, but the main reason is school. School makes teenagers worry about when they will get their homework done or what their grade is. Ms. Fuller says, “Students try to complete their homework at school if they have a tight schedule.” But that’s not always the case. When students can balance their schedules, it can lead to huge success. Ms. Fuller said, “As long as students can balance their schedule and school, they can participate in anything they want to do.”

When students are out of school, they might have a lot to worry about. But once they go to sleep, school can keep them up at night. Ms. Fuller says, “Kids’ sleep is affected when they have a hard time falling asleep from worrying about school-related topics. But if students can manage their schedule, they can sleep easier with less on their mind.”

Parents and teachers can play a big role in helping students participate in activities. Ms. Fuller says, “Teachers and parents can encourage students to participate in a club.” This could benefit kids by giving them something fun to do and serving as a stress reliever.

When students participate in clubs, it can greatly benefit their future. Ms. Fuller says, “Students who participate in any clubs can improve their confidence and social skills.”

If you ever need help balancing your schedule, Ms. Fuller says, “Students can always come to the counseling office or turn to a teacher they trust!”
