At Alamo Heights Junior School, recess does more than just give time to those who clean the cafeteria. It’s one of the most important parts of the day, helping kids learn to work as a team, improve academic performance, and stay fit.

Mrs. Taggart shares, “I think research shows that most people should get at least 30 minutes of outside time every day.” According to DSHS.Texas.gov, studies show that recess increases students’ physical activity, improves memory and attention span, reduces disruptive behavior, and much more.

Recess also benefits students by allowing them to communicate with friends, both old and new. It helps students build the courage to speak up and overcome shyness. Mrs. Taggart states, “Social skills help to support one another and encourage each other, giving second chances, and just generally being good humans, which fosters a supportive environment.”

Mrs. Taggart explains the benefits of having recess by stating, “It’s good for the students’ physical health and emotional health. It allows them to have a break during classes to socialize and meet with their friends, and that’s very important.” According to Mrs. Taggart, recess not only provides a break from schoolwork but also allows students to socialize with others.

Overall, recess is important for students to maintain a healthy life from an early age by improving their health, memory, and social skills. By allowing students to have recess, schools like Alamo Heights Junior School can help them stay active and healthy.
