Therapy Animals of San Antonio is a group of various animals that travel around the city with one main goal: to calm people down. This non-profit organization even visited Uvalde after the tragic shooting to offer comfort.
Recently, the group visited Alamo Heights’s 6th Grade Girls Service Club. “The group is called the Therapy Animals of San Antonio, and they came to share what they do and the types of places they visit, not just in San Antonio but beyond. They go to schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and even the bereavement center. They serve many different places,” said Dr. Frey, the leader of the service club.
The therapy animals weren’t there to comfort the girls, but rather to teach them about the work they do. “They brought cards with information about each animal, and the girls in the service club were able to interact with them and pet them,” Dr. Frey explained.
This visit wouldn’t have happened without the support of the parents. “The parents in charge of the Girls Service Club reached out to Therapy Animals of San Antonio to invite them. They met in the cafeteria, and then we moved to the Little Theater, where they gave a presentation on their mission and the work they do around San Antonio,” Dr. Frey added.
The Therapy Animals of San Antonio aren’t service animals, but animals that help calm people in stressful situations. The service club learned about three different dogs that help people feel better before tests, surgeries, and other challenging events.
