Understanding Grades: More Than Just a Number

by Hayes L.

If you’ve ever gone to school, you know that grades are like gold. Every day, students try their hardest to earn good grades and impress their parents and peers.

“What matters is that you’re trying your best,” Mr. Campbell says. “And if you’re trying your best and getting 80s, that’s great.” He believes that if students put in their best effort, their grades will take care of themselves.

Mr. Campbell has 150 students, and only two are failing. “If someone is failing, I want that student to care and to try—then I will help them,” he explains.

To help his students learn from their mistakes, he provides detailed feedback. “I’m very fair. For a writing assignment, I try to write as many comments as possible,” Mr. Campbell exclaims.

Some students may think that a failing grade defines them, but Mr. Campbell disagrees. “Grades don’t reflect what you know; they may simply reflect what you’ve studied for a unit,” he says.

To motivate students, Mr. Campbell gives out awards to those who put in their best effort. “Kids will try really hard for it, so the work they do is better because of The Campbell Soup awards,” he comments.

“The most important grades are the ones that take the longest to grade, so they could come from the start of the year or the end,” he explains, emphasizing that significant grades can sometimes appear unexpectedly.

In conclusion, grades are more than just numbers—they reflect effort, growth, and development. Your academic journey will take you far in life.
