Everybody loves Alamo Heights Junior School’s Electives Night. It is a night where kids come to the auditorium to learn about the electives they can choose. This event is for up-and-coming 6th graders.
Electives Night is designed for new students at the Junior School. “Well, it’s just for up-and-coming 6th graders to come and hear about the electives,” Mrs. Gil shared.
“Well, hopefully what it does is give kids a better understanding of what the elective is like,” says Mrs. Whitty. Kids get a chance to learn more about each elective.
“Mrs. Bynum and Dr. Guthrie mostly—I mean, we all work together—but Mrs. Bynum and Dr. Guthrie run Electives Night,” Mrs. Gil explained. All the teachers work together to organize the event.
Additionally, students get to see every elective. “It’s important for all of us to showcase our elective classes to all of the up-and-coming 6th graders to get a chance to recruit them,” Mr. Garcia added.
“I mean, it could depend. Some kids already know what they’re going to do, but sometimes they decide to do something else,” Mrs. Gil remarked. Electives Night can influence students’ decisions about which electives they want to take.
Electives Night takes place in the auditorium. “It’s in the auditorium. I think there’s a dual-language meeting that happens before that, but all the kids go to the auditorium,” Mrs. Whitty mentioned.
Lastly, from students to teachers, everyone loves Electives Night. It may seem like a simple event, but it can change the minds of many new students, ultimately benefiting Alamo Heights Junior School.
