A huge milestone is approaching for the eighth graders on May 21 at 6:00 p.m.—they are “graduating” from middle school! This is a major achievement not only for the students but also for Dr. Guthrie.
When asked what the Eighth Grade Completion Ceremony means to him, Dr. Guthrie shared, “This will be the first group [of students] I’ve been their principal for all three years at the junior school… so that means a little something more special to me.” He added, “In my speech that night, I’m sure I’ll emphasize that that’s the connection I have with them.” This will be Dr. Guthrie’s first group of students he has guided from the beginning to the end of their junior school journey—an experience that holds special meaning for any principal.
In addition to the emotional value of the evening, Dr. Guthrie announced an exciting new feature: “This year, we’re going to have an award for teachers that students will vote for. This award is for any teacher; they could be sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.”
There will be three student-nominated awards:
- Rigor Award – for teachers who challenge students and hold them accountable for learning.
- Creative Teacher Award – for teachers who inspire creativity.
- Heart of Gold Award – for teachers who always have a smile and make their students feel welcome and valued.
Another change to this year’s ceremony is the addition of more academic awards. These honors will recognize students who have stood out academically throughout the year. The traditional athletic awards will still be part of the ceremony.
In conclusion, the Eighth Grade Completion Ceremony is shaping up to be one of the most meaningful events yet—for students, families, and especially for Dr. Guthrie. With heartfelt moments, exciting new awards, and well-deserved recognition, it promises to be the most rewarding completion ceremony in Alamo Heights Junior School history.
