You may know that the high school here at AHISD is currently under construction—but did you know that Alamo Heights Junior School will also be getting an upgrade? Starting in April 2027 and continuing through June 2028, AHJS will undergo a series of renovations and additions designed to improve the school for future students and staff.

Some of the exciting updates include a brand-new sixth grade building, renovations to the cafeteria, new play fields, and even more enhancements around campus.

The construction will take place in phases, starting toward the end of a school year. AHJS Principal Dr. Guthrie explained that the process is being carefully planned to minimize disruptions. “They recognize that they can’t just start tearing buildings down and rebuilding buildings without being very aware of school schedules and when kids are in school,” she said. This means students won’t have to worry too much about construction interfering with their learning.

One major part of the renovation will be replacing the annex building, which currently houses most sixth grade classes. Since this work can’t be completed in just one summer, sixth graders during that school year will be temporarily relocated. “They won’t be able to do that over one summer,” said Dr. Guthrie. “For that year, the sixth graders will have to end up in portables.”

But why is the construction happening in the first place? Dr. Guthrie pointed out that the campus is showing its age. “This building was built in 1959, including the gym. They just show their age—it’s small, the roof is very low. Especially when you’re playing volleyball, the ball gets stuck very quickly.”

Overall, the construction project promises to bring exciting improvements to AHJS. With updated spaces, better equipment, and more room to learn and play, the changes will benefit future students and teachers for years to come.
