I’m a huge fan of design. The way shapes and lines can come together to make a logo or a piece of art is especially interesting to me. But in my search for city logos like Austin’s new rebrand and the San Antonio quatrefoil, I realized Alamo Heights has no logo. It sounds absurd, but after looking everywhere, the city’s logo is nowhere to be seen. This gap in branding begs the question: Where is Alamo Heights’ logo?

Deep Dive

Alamo Heights is a city with a big culture and lots of people, with a population of just over 7,300. No significant icon for the city of Alamo Heights is a gigantic loss of identity. In the search for a city-wide logo, I started where everyone does: Google. My findings were minimal, though. The results consisted mainly of the Alamo Heights Independent School District logo or the seal of Alamo Heights. No logo for the city itself was found. I had to dig deeper.

Google has been described more and more as quick, easy searching. But what if our answers weren’t easily found? For this, I emailed Buddy Kuhn, the City Manager of Alamo Heights. A City Manager oversees day-to-day operations. Either he or his assistant might know about branding or marketing materials for Alamo Heights.

Their Response

A day later, Kuhn’s assistant, Jennifer Reyna, responded. I started reading. Their email followed the usual structure: warm greeting, block of text, warm sendoff. But the answer I was looking for did not appear.

“We do not have a formal logo,”
—Jennifer Reyna, Assistant to the City Manager

I continued reading, but knowing this was a major letdown for me. I love good branding and really wished to see some design.

“…but utilize the city seal to represent official messages from the City of Alamo Heights along with another one that you find in our email blasts and website.”

Some clarity formed. Instead of a logo, they utilized a city seal.

“The one that states Alamo Heights Texas—perhaps it’s more of a branding icon, but we do utilize both of them. It’s our method of validating that the message we send or share is authentic and coming from the City of Alamo Heights.”

The email continued to show that their branding mainly consisted of the city seal and that text element. The mystery of the Alamo Heights branding gap was no more. To be fair, I did see both the seal and the text prominently featured on the Alamo Heights website, but it didn’t click that those details were part of the whole branding.

Why Visual Identity Is Important

When you see a corporate logo, it usually is a simple icon that is easy to recognize and connect to the company. Branding is important so that people can recognize you and your work easily.

If people recognize you easily, it can make them more intrigued to visit your website or view any content of yours. This is the main reason I ask this question. I love to see creativity in logos, and I hope that soon you can realize the importance of branding in content and logos.

Super interesting and what a great find (not finding a logo). I am amazed at the different interest that middle schoolers have these days. Loved the article.
