In 7th grade girls basketball, players learn teamwork, responsibility, and basketball skills. The team works on improving individual skills while also learning how to play together.
Practice Routine
Practices are planned to help players improve skills and prepare for games. Coach Saenz said, “Monday is our skills day, so if we want to work on defense, shooting, or dribbling, we can do that. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend more time on team things like running plays or inbound plays, and then it’s game day.” Players practice shooting, dribbling, defense, and running plays so they are ready for games.
Playing Time
Playing time is earned through effort and responsibility. Coach Saenz explained, “Playing time is determined by the girls’ attitude, if they show up on time, give it their all, and make sure they pass their classes.” This teaches players to work hard and stay responsible on and off the court.
Improving Skills
When a player is struggling, the coach helps them improve. Coach Saenz shared, “If I notice that one of my players is struggling with shooting, I would break down the shooting form and go back to the basics with some drills.”
Motivation and Coaching
Coach Saenz motivates her players by supporting them. She said, “I motivate players by letting them know that I am there for them off and on the court, and if they are not having a good game, I motivate them by saying it’s okay—get ready for the next play.” She also talks to players about mistakes instead of just benching them. “If a player is making a mistake, I have a conversation with them by saying, ‘Hey, this is what we are doing wrong,’ and I tell them how to fix it. I won’t just bench a player without having that conversation.”
Expectations
Coach Saenz expects players to be ready to work every day. She said, “I expect them every day to get ready to work, just making sure they are coachable, because if they keep making the same mistake over again, that’s going to hurt their playing time.”
Conclusion
Seventh grade girls basketball helps players improve their skills, learn teamwork, and be responsible. Through practice, coaching, and effort, players grow both as athletes and students.
