The ball soars across the court as the girls call out one another’s names. When it is their time to shine, the girls’ basketball team finds its way to victory through strong teamwork and constant communication. Every pass, call, and adjustment made on the court shows just how important communication is to the success of the team.
One of the main ways communication benefits gameplay is by helping players and coaches better understand one another and see different perspectives. Coach Tacker, the coach for the 8th grade girls blue basketball team at Alamo Heights Junior School, explains this when she says, “Being a player, you see things from a different perspective than coaches. Their role in letting us know what’s going on or what they see is very important.” Communication allows both players and coaches to stay informed, making it easier to adjust strategies and stay connected during the game. Being able to understand each other’s perspectives helps everyone work more efficiently and stay focused on the court.
Another reason communication is so important is that it strengthens teamwork. “Being good teammates and having each other’s backs is important, and the more they enjoy each other and support each other, the more they have each other’s backs,” Coach Tacker says. Teamwork plays a huge role in successful gameplay, influencing attitudes, trust, and how players treat one another during high-pressure moments. Strong communication builds this teamwork, allowing players to stay confident and united even when challenges arise.
Finally, one of the biggest aspects of basketball, the gameplay itself, relies heavily on communication. When something does not go according to plan, communication becomes essential to getting the game back on track. “We can go in with a game plan, but if the other team throws something at us that we haven’t talked about or the girls aren’t used to, we have got to be able to communicate that,” Coach Tacker explains. Whether it is adjusting to a new defense or responding to unexpected plays, communication allows the team to adapt quickly and effectively.
There are many important variables that contribute to a successful game, but communication is what ties everything together. By leading to strong teamwork and clear understanding, communication brings the entire victory together.
