Education is one of the most important things for students and kids. Some may ask how learning trends have changed and how students learn now is different from how students their age learned a few years ago. There are multiple views on how learning trends have changed over the years, not just at Alamo Heights Junior School, but all over the world.

How has hands-on learning helped students?
Changes in education are common, but always evolving. Mrs. Christopher, an administrator at Alamo Heights Junior School, shared how she understands how learning trends have shifted over the past few years by stating, “There’s been a shift recently because of COVID, but I would say maybe 20, 30 years ago, a lot more research was done on how people in general learn new information, and so more of the practical, hands-on applications were put in place as opposed to lecturing and making kids just sit and listen.” Her statement shows that students who do more hands-on assignments, compared to just sitting and listening about a topic, learn the information better. According to Explore the Benefits of Hands-on Learning: 15 Powerful Ways, “Hands-on learning helps learners to understand the concept and apply it in real-world situations. Students perform the task, which guides them to grasp the knowledge easily for a long retention period.” This shows that if students do more hands-on learning, then they will remember the information better than just sitting and listening.

How is technology changing the way students learn?
Technology in classes has been becoming more and more common for students to use while learning. How Technology Is Changing the Way Students Learn stated, “You know how in school, some students get bored because the teacher’s going too slow, while others feel lost because it’s too fast? Technology is fixing that. Online learning platforms like Khan Academy, Coursera, or even classroom tools like Google Classroom have made it possible for students to learn at their own speed. If you don’t get something, you can replay the video, re-do the quiz, or find a different explanation altogether.” This shows that new technology and learning sites have helped students improve and expand their learning.

How technology is useful in school
Technology has been used more and more in schools, and some might wonder if it is useful or not. Mrs. Christopher showed she thinks that technology could be useful in school to introduce learning techniques. She supported this by saying, “Now that we have ChatGPT and AI as a tool, we’ve got a lot to learn. There’s a lot that can help increase your learning quickly because there’s a lot of information out there, but we all need to learn how to use it in a way that’s helpful and not like having it do things for us, but in terms of understanding material and all that kind of stuff rather than replace us.”

Technology in classes has been becoming more and more common for students to use. Learning for students will change for the better in the future based on how it has been evolving now.
