Every year, Alamo Heights Junior School dedicates a week to compassion and friendliness. This week, called Kindness Week, urges students and teachers to be kind and have fun. Kindness Week is a nationwide celebration where schools hold engaging activities and themed days throughout the week to emphasize the importance of kindness and consideration.
The main point of Kindness Week is to recognize one another with care and compassion. Mrs. Godfrey, the school’s Kindness Week director, emphasizes this initiative, stating that, “It’s about showcasing that we’re all humans. We all deserve respect, and we all deserve kindness.” Kindness Week is bringing these themes back to the students and teachers.
Kindness Week is also introducing thoughtfulness on a large scale, even if it is for just five short days. “I think there’s value in doing things where it brings a certain message to the forefront, to the whole school and community,” states Mrs. Godfrey. These values help create a positive environment where everyone can learn and grow together, hopefully building lasting habits that extend far beyond the designated week.
This week is helping and teaching our school and students how to use these attributes to meet new people and be kinder and better toward their peers. Mrs. Godfrey says that kindness definitely is essential, especially when it comes to making friends. “Middle school students are social beings. You are learning how to be friends with everyone and finding your groups, and kindness isn’t gonna hurt.” This approach highlights how kindness serves as the foundation for creating meaningful connections and building a supportive community.
The Alamo Heights Junior School loves this week, especially all the fun themed days where you get to dress up and match with your friends while wearing goofy costumes. According to Mrs. Godfrey, even the teachers and staff have fun during these days. “Even just for the staff, we even came together during Kindness Week because we all wanted to match.” This week is definitely fun for everyone, even the staff.
Not only do the students participate in the themes, but they also participate in the activities. This year, we had bingo cards of kindness, where you try to complete it like bingo. Mrs. Godfrey states that this year we had a bunch of kids complete it. “We had, I think, over 200 bingo submissions.” Kindness Week is something that is helping our community and is hopefully leading us on a track to success.
