A few times a year at Alamo Heights Junior School, a group of sixth-grade boys stays after school—not because they have to, but because they want to help. The 6th Grade Boys Service Club is more than just an after-school activity. It is a place where students learn how service, teamwork, and responsibility can strengthen both their character and their community.

Learning the Value of Service at AHJS

The 6th Grade Boys Service Club at Alamo Heights was created to give students a chance to serve others while learning what it means to be a good citizen. Club members participate in hands-on projects such as helping set up school events, collecting donations for local charities, and assisting with campus clean-up days. These activities show students that service does not always have to be big to be meaningful.

By working together on service projects, the boys learn how their actions can positively affect others. “Even small jobs make a difference,” said sixth grader Floyd Gray, a club member. “Working for the club made me feel like I was really part of the community, and it felt good knowing we were helping people.”

Growing Responsibility and Citizenship

Over the years, many students have participated in the Boys Service Club and left with a stronger sense of responsibility. The club emphasizes respect, accountability, and cooperation—skills that help students both in and out of the classroom. Some former members continue their service by joining the National Junior Honor Society, where leadership and community involvement remain important.

Club sponsor Mr. Thompson, a teacher at Alamo Heights Junior School, explained, “This club helps students understand that leadership starts with service. These boys are learning early that helping others is part of being a responsible member of society.”

Building Confidence and Leadership Skills

Middle school can be a challenging time, but the Boys Service Club helps students gain confidence by giving them leadership roles and responsibilities. Whether organizing supplies or working as a team during service events, members learn to speak up, work together, and take pride in their contributions.

Floyd Gray shared that being part of the club helped him feel more confident. “It helped me believe in myself more,” he said. “I felt proud of what we did.”

Making a Difference One Good Deed at a Time

The 6th Grade Boys Service Club at Alamo Heights Junior School benefits both the students involved and the community they serve. Through simple acts of kindness and teamwork, the boys are learning lessons that will stay with them long after sixth grade. By giving their time and effort, they are proving that they are ready to make a positive difference—one good deed at a time.
