Have you ever wondered what happens when schools have scheduling issues? Recently, AHJS has experienced this. Even though two groups planned events at the same time, the situation ended up showing how people at AHJS can work together to solve problems.
According to our principal, Dr. Guthrie, the mix-up happened because one group was following a schedule they were used to. “They just are modeling what they do after what the high school does… what they didn’t realize is that our PTO’s biggest fundraiser is Springfest, which happens at the same time.” Because of this, the PTO’s Springfest and another school fundraiser were accidentally planned for the same time.
Instead of letting the situation turn into an argument, the adults involved decided to talk about it and find a solution. Dr. Guthrie explained, “We didn’t freak out. We didn’t point fingers, we didn’t get upset. We sat down right here and we just talked about it.” By communicating with each other, both groups were able to understand what happened and work through the issues.
Even with the overlap, both fundraisers still ended up being successful. Dr. Guthrie shared, “The PTO met their fundraising goal anyway, and the Junior Mule Team, even though I don’t know the financial part of it, I’ve heard they’ve done really well.” This showed that even though the events happened at the same time, the community still supported both groups.
Because of this experience, the school is planning to be more careful with scheduling in the future. Dr. Guthrie said, “We’re just gonna be a little bit more aware and pay more attention to our little overlapping map.” By keeping better track of events, the school hopes to avoid conflicts like this again.
Overall, the situation ended positively for everyone involved. Both groups were able to continue their fundraisers and still reach their goals. With better planning in the future, the school hopes to avoid conflicts like this while continuing to support programs that help students.
