Throughout the year, the Junior School choir prepares for multiple events, shows, and special occasions. One of their biggest performances takes place at the end of the year in May, called the Pop Show. As the date approaches, choir members practice endlessly to prepare for this exciting event, which will be held at the Alamo Heights High School auditorium on May 14. These performers become very dedicated to succeed in the show.

For most choir students, the Pop Show is considered one of the biggest performances of the year. It draws the largest crowds, features the most popular songs, and includes more solo performances than any other choir event. This article will break down the Pop Show and explain how performers prepare for it.

The performers begin preparing after their UIL contest, a major choir competition. This means students start rehearsing in March for a show that takes place in May. The choir director gives students plenty of time to ensure they reach their full potential by showtime. While some may think the director chooses the songs, they are actually selected by the students. Choir director Rachel Holiday explained, “We have a brainstorming session on Padlet where students can post songs they want the choir to sing, and all members vote on their favorites.”

Students prepare for the Pop Show in many different ways. Some go out of their way to practice outside of school, especially those auditioning to perform a solo. In addition, the choir works on their group pieces daily during class. Rachel Holiday stated, “We have our choir pieces that we work on and practice daily in class.”

This show is one of the most unique choir performances of the year. It features familiar, popular songs and includes the highest number of soloists. Rachel Holiday explained, “The Pop Show is important because we have so many solos, and it is a great chance to show off individual talent in our choir.”

If you are able to attend, the Pop Show will take place at the Alamo Heights High School auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on May 14. Don’t forget, admission is free!
