by Magnolia B. and Evie C.

Preparing for the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test is a very important milestone for students in Texas, as it evaluates their understanding and skills across several key subjects. Whether it’s for meeting graduation requirements or simply achieving academic success, preparing for the STAAR test can be challenging. However, with the right approach, students can reduce their anxiety and perform their best. Bella Draghici, an Alamo Heights Junior School student, says, “After school on Tuesday and Thursday, I do math for two hours, then the rest I prepare for STAAR.”

All students in Texas are required to take the STAAR test. “The STAAR test is mandatory for students in grades 3–12. It’s a cumulative test that covers all the material students should have learned, and it is like a final exam,” says Christie Christopher, Alamo Heights instructional coach. The STAAR is a significant component of the academic year, serving as a tool that evaluates students’ knowledge.

Preparing for the STAAR test is essential for understanding the content and types of questions students encounter. According to Mrs. Alexander, “Some effective strategies include staying engaged in class, attending lunch bunch sessions, and taking advantage of before- and after-school tutoring.” Therefore, it is advisable to take advantage of all available options.

Additionally, preparing for the STAAR is very important. “Preparing for the STAAR test is very important because it will help you get a better understanding of what’s going to be on the test, and also just being prepared,” says Christie Christopher.

Furthermore, it’s good to be influenced by others when preparing for tests—especially the STAAR. While teachers play a key role, parents can also have a major impact in helping students. Bella Draghici explains, “I think teachers, parents, and most importantly yourself can help you get prepared and influenced to study for the STAAR.”

The STAAR test is right around the corner. According to Mrs. Alexander, academic dean, “STAAR test starts April 15 and concludes on April 29.” So, students should start preparing now rather than later.

In conclusion, preparing for the STAAR is not just important but essential for success in the next school year. The test can also motivate students to improve and gain confidence in their academic abilities.
