The 7th-grade volleyball coaches at Alamo Heights start the season by hosting tryouts. “Roughly 120 people tried out,” says A Team player Aria Burrell. Out of the three teams to make, 12 girls make each team, and the top 12 get chosen for the A Team, or as the school calls it, the “Blue” team. The “Gold” team is the B Team, and the “White” team is the Go Team. In the tryouts, all girls went through different drills and techniques to show the coaches their talent or potential. As expected, a few girls stood out and had pretty much secured a Blue Team spot.
All three teams started off the season strong with wins vs. Garner Middle School. After the win, they gained the right to celebrate. However, the girls needed to be prepared because this was just the beginning. They had to expect tougher opponents because this year the school joined a new district, meaning harder competition.
Practices after wins look a lot prettier than after a loss. After a win, they would continue doing drills and practicing, perfecting basic skills. After a loss, players often ran or had a much harder practice. Overall, practices helped improve players’ skills and discipline throughout the year.
The season ended great for all teams, with the Blue Team finishing 6-2, the Gold Team finishing 4-4, and the White Team finishing 6-2. All three teams agreed that Lopez Middle School was the hardest opponent they had faced, but the Blue Team had a chance to get their revenge at the end-of-season tournament. This tournament is for all of the A Teams across the district, where they compete for the district championship. In the end, Alamo Heights came up short of a championship with a close loss to Tex Hill Middle School, but they all kept their heads up because they know that next year is another year to prove why the Mules are the best team in the district.
