Celebrating Turkee Dae: A Unique School Tradition

Turkee Dae is loved by many students and teachers. It is a holiday that occurs every year on the Friday before Thanksgiving break. It isn’t a normal holiday. For example, we have school on Turkee Dae, but that makes it all the better. You’re probably thinking, “Uhhhhh, a holiday that you have school on! Booo.” However, holidays are more than just days off.

Ryan Fulmer, an AHJS student who dressed up for Turkee Dae, says, “I think it’s a great way for kids to express their feelings and their [emotions].” Ryan says he loves Turkee Dae and hopes the tradition continues.

Another opinion on Turkee Dae comes from Dr. Guthrie, the school principal. “We do a lot of good things here. We have very serious and rigorous courses, and kids learn a lot. With that being said, there is always time to have fun. Even during the school days, we have some fun. Right before a big holiday like Thanksgiving and winter break, I think it’s appropriate to let kids have fun and do something different,” he says.

The final opinion is from Ms. Mendoza, a history teacher at AHJS. “Turkee Dae is a fun tradition that allows teachers and students to break away from the normal and be silly for a day. It makes me happy and also gives me something to look forward to and participate in,” she says.

Turkee Dae isn’t just a holiday. It is a tradition that everyone enjoys and looks forward to every year. It’s a time when abnormal is normal, and AHJS comes together to celebrate joyfully each year. Be sure to dress up next year.
