Changing the school start time would disrupt everyone’s schedule, creating a ripple effect throughout the day. Here’s what Ned Gretzinger, a student at Alamo Heights Junior School, thinks about changing the school start time: “8:45, I gotta be at school at 8:35. I probably gotta be in the car, and then that affects you—keep that chain reaction that affects you.” According to Gretzinger, altering the school start time would send a chain reaction that disrupts students’ entire schedules, demonstrating that small changes could have big consequences.
Adjusting school start times in either direction could increase parental concerns about their children’s safety, whether they are walking home or waiting for their parents to pick them up. The Sleep Foundation says, “64% of parents worry about their children’s safety in the dark, either on the way to or from school. For these parents, keeping school start times the same would allow their students to safely walk to and from school.” For these concerned parents, maintaining current school start times ensures their students can travel to and from school safely.
Another argument for keeping the school start time is that it allows students to get good rest. Elementary school begins earlier in the morning, which doesn’t provide students with enough sleep. Gretzinger believes, “I have been able to get more sleep because we have a later start time than elementary.” This shows that the existing start time allows students to receive proper sleep.
In conclusion, altering the school start time might disrupt people’s routines and interfere with extracurricular activities. Therefore, when you feel frustrated about early morning wake-up calls, consider that changing school schedules could create significant challenges for students, parents, teachers, and the school community.
