When most people think about Social Studies, they often assume long lessons and boring lectures. However, teachers at Alamo Heights Junior School are emphasizing the importance of the subject. Mr. Miller and Mr. Ramos, both Social Studies teachers at Alamo Heights, are leaving lasting impacts on their students.
There are many important aspects of Social Studies, but when asked which one was most significant, Mr. Ramos said, “The most important thing we can learn from social studies is how everyone is connected.” Understanding these connections can provide a new perspective on life and how different people and cultures interact.
Expanding on the importance of Social Studies, Mr. Ramos also stated, “It’s important to understand where we came from.” Recognizing our history helps us appreciate the journey that led us to where we are today.
Social Studies is a subject that requires students to develop a broad understanding of the world. Mr. Miller explained, “It’s important to understand different cultures and other people.” Often, we see news about different cultures and global struggles without fully grasping their realities. Learning about these cultures allows us to better understand and empathize with others.
History is full of mistakes—some more serious than others. “If we don’t learn about history, we could repeat the same mistakes,” Mr. Miller said grimly. Studying Social Studies helps students recognize past errors and avoid making them again.
“I think it’s good to educate people on how good we have it,” Mr. Miller added. In today’s world, it is easy to take things for granted—fair laws, quality education, and many other privileges. Educating students about these advantages can help them be more mindful and appreciative of what they have.
