The Importance of School for Student Success

by Reilly H.

Some students wonder if school is really important. At the Alamo Heights Junior School, everyone works hard, but what are the benefits? Sarah Holloway, an 8th-grade student at the Junior School, states that school “teaches a lot of valuable lessons that you can use later in life, but it’ll give you a bunch of opportunities like getting into a good school.”

While some may argue that certain subjects, such as math, are unnecessary, “I think math, um, teaches you how to think through problems and situations, like critically,” said Sarah Holloway.

It is very beneficial to stay focused during school. “I’ve already put in so much work that it’s already started to pay off, or that I don’t have as much homework if I do my work in class, where I can go focus on, like, diving and doing other things that I enjoy,” states Sarah. Victor Saldana, the assistant principal at the Junior School, also states, “I am able to live the way I want to live.”

Motivation plays a big role in success, especially when it gets hard. “There were a lot of really hard moments in my life that I would not have survived if I did not have the support of a loving teacher,” shared Camilla Acosta, a Spanish teacher at the Alamo Heights Junior School. Having someone around that really cared “taught me how to persevere even when things get hard,” said Sra. Acosta. While people are a big motivation, life experiences can motivate you as well. “Seeing how we struggled as a family, um, living basically in poverty, that was motivation enough,” stated Mr. Saldana.

In conclusion, the experiences shared by students and faculty at Alamo Heights Junior School highlight the importance of school and future opportunities. Whether it’s through critical thinking, the support of caring people, or the determination to overcome challenges, school plays a vital role in shaping the path to success.
